Citrupress IV has the versatility to serve multiple markets for which there are significant unmet medical needs. Citrulline is an amino acid that is a key component of the urea cycle in the liver for which it acts as a substrate in the production of l-Arginine, the direct precursor for nitric oxide production. By increasing the liver concentration of citrulline a cascade of metabolic event ensues resulting in a targeted therapeutic bronchodilation and vasodilation effect. Approximately 40,000 children are born each year in the United States with congenital heart defects, of these, a large majority will require congenital heart repair surgery. This is the targeted market for prophylaxis of pulmonary hypertension in post cardiac surgery patients.
