LIVERSOL (Ursodeoxycholic Acid Suspension)


Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) suspension was developed to treat pediatric patients who are unable to swallow the marketed UDCA capsules or tablets. The products must be broken and their constituents mixed with food or liquids in order for the pediatric patient to ingest the drug. However, a major issue is that bile is intolerably bitter tasting and children either refuse to take product or become nauseated , regurgitate or spit out the mixture, making accurate dosage and compliance very difficult.

Dr. Falk Pharma GmbH of Freiburg, Germany markets a patented formulation of ursodeoxycholic acid suspension which has pleasant lemony taste and offers precise dosing. This product has been available in Europe for the past seven years and has been well received and utilized. The initial targeted market in the United States will be pediatric cholestasis patients , however, the largest market will be the cystic fibrosis associated liver disease market for which an NDA is currently being prepared.
